Jamie Winter opened the scoring with a strong shot from outside the penalty area and it wasn't long before Simon Johnson had doubled the Leeds lead as he took advantage of a defensive slip up. On the stroke of half-time Johnson made it 3-0 when he scored a brilliant solo goal, beating three defenders in a confined space on the right of the penalty box before rifling the ball into the net. Seven minutes into the second half Martin Woods scored from a free-kick and Derek Tyrell and Stuart Edwards added further goals. Sean McDaid replaced Henry McStay, Derek Tyrell came on for Robert Constable, Kevin Smith came on for Barry Corr and Justin Bowler replaced Harpal Singh at the start of the second half. There were further changes on the hour mark with Cousins replacing Jamie Winter, Damian Reeves replacing Edward Keyes and Chris Jones taking over from Simon Johnson. With ten minutes to go United brought back Henry McStay and Robert Constable in place of Stuart Edwards and Kevin Cronin.
